I’m Sam (BA Hons, PGCE, MA Ed), the founder of WordPower Tutoring.

I am a fully qualified Primary Teacher and Literacy Leader with 15 years experience of successfully teaching literacy to children from ages 4-11.

I am passionate and committed to delivering high quality literacy teaching to enable children to reach their full potential and to give learners the skills and knowledge they need to have successful and happy futures.

Undertaking my teacher training in the U.K, I am fully trained in planning and delivering outstanding phonics instruction.

England is ranked globally the fourth country in the world for teaching reading, due in part to it’s focus on quality phonics teaching. I have taught phonics for 15 years in a range of schools across the UK and Australia and achieved outstanding results; teaching phonics as a fundamental part of successful literacy instruction.

I was surprised when teaching in Australia in 2020, that phonics was not being taught to the same explicit and high standards that I was used to in the U.K education system. I have taught in a range of private and public schools across Melbourne and Queensland, and found this lack of systematic and quality phonics tuition to be a common theme throughout the schools.

As an experienced private tutor, I have also witnessed the failure of mainstream tutoring companies to provide explicit and focused phonics tuition to plug the gaps in phonic knowledge of struggling readers and spellers and support children on their successful literacy learning journey.

As an experienced literacy teacher and private tutor who has experienced immense reading success with phonics, I have founded WordPower Tuturing to share my rich knowledge, resources, experience and teaching instruction with your child to accelerate their literacy success.

We offer a bespoke tutoring experience which is not a ‘one size fits all’ approach, but rather is a learning experience that strategically addresses the specific literacy needs of your child. We use phonics as foundational ‘building blocks’ to support the successful growth of reading and writing skills. We understand the significance and vitalness of phonics in outstanding literacy instruction.

We appreciate the barriers that children who struggle with literacy face and are skilled at putting them at ease, developing their confidence and growing their self esteem. We are particularly passionate about motivating disengaged or unconfident learners to the fulfillment of their literacy potential. We know that children learn best when they are engaged, comfortable and having fun.

At WordPower Tutoring, we are passionate about quality literacy instruction and are highly knowledgeable in quality texts to engage your child. We believe that reading and writing should be enjoyable and want to inspire your child to begin a lifelong love of literacy.

In my spare time I love reading and writing and I have two primary age daughters who I taught to read using phonics at age 3 and 4. Please watch a video of them reading on this website. This fluency was developed solely by explicit phonics teaching.

Having children of my own, I keenly understand the desire as a parent to give our children the best possible start in life and to do everything we can to secure their successful future.
